  1. Before reading this comment, please understand that I have no idea whether the screenshot above is of Furi Kuri.

That being said, Furi Kuri is utterly devoid of a plot, and all those who claim some "deep underlying meaning" are ordered to go tell me about the deep, underlying messages and symbolism within a pile of my shit, which no doubt makes more sense than Furi Kuri.

This has been a public service announcement of hatred from Derek.

  2. I bet you also read biographies of key authors, as well as volumes of critical analysis of their work, before tackling any novel, you AUTHORIAL INTENT NAZI.

  3. Anyone can contrive fictional logic explaining any series of events. Interestingly, were an author or artist (and I assure you this is a hypothetical situations) to draw a series of doodles involving typical anime themes such as robots, schoolgirls, ecchi and stylized battle scenes and make it into an anime, that very same person would be the one to reap the most gain, in the form of intellectual credit, from coming up with those very same contrivances.

    Interesting!

  4. Yes, but apparently not everyone can contrive *interesting* fictional logic to explain any series of events. You, sir, are responsible for that slight against yourself, not I or those that have that ability!

I just think the pseudo-Freudian role played by the FLCL in episodes 3-4 "type a little too close to home row" for you to be comfortable.

    Eh??

    How's THAT?

  5. I hate to sound too cliche, but were I wishing to have to make up "interesting fictional logic to explain" a television show, I believe I'd much rather apply that same mental effort to a novel. I believe a majority of Furi Kuri fans are simply slobbering teens who enjoy seeing the pretty action scenes on Cartoon Network, and would look at a person with head cocked if told "it has deep philsophical meaning." I fail to see any indication, when watching FLCL, that the audience is supposed to do anything mental other than look agog at the hyper-super-happy-lucky action scenes and veild pedophilism. That's not to say that I believe television should remove thinking entirely; it's just to say that I feel people are wrongly assigning the Big Stamp O' Quality to the show for reasons it does not deserve. Simply because a person could come up with an elaborate and interesting theory behind the events in a typical episode of Sesame street does not mean that Sesame Street is an intellectual show with deep meaning, nor should its audience be shunned for not creating his or her own meaning. I do not feel that FLCL was intended, by any stretch of the imagination, to have its audience stretching their minds any more than 2ch cartoons were.

We could begin to discuss other such media in this vein by discussing some of David Lynch's work, but I'd simply argue that such works give clear indication that the audience is supposed to fill in gaps and have his or her own interpretation of plot devices *specifically written to be open to such interpretation.* I watch Lynch's work and see a cogent storyline which is then suspended by inexplicable or "just plain weird" moments that force me to reconsider my previous interpretation of events. I watch FLCL and see a typical anime, but with weird crap happening like girl turning into a robot with a guitar and kill other robots with sound waves. Both situations are certainly odd and inspire thought -- I'm not denying that. What I'm saying is that when I watch FLCL, I just plain am not driven to care to explain such oddities because the show itself does not lead me to a state which makes explanation worthwhile.

In other news, the foam floating on the top of the toilet water after my last urinary venture formed some sort of spiral. What does this symbolize? I suppose I'm a mental neanderthal for not bothering to explain my urine's intention behind forming the spiral.

    I love you,
